Michael Szonyi (宋怡明)

Director
Professor of Chinese History

Michael Szonyi is Director of the Fairbank Center at Harvard University and Professor of Chinese History in Harvard’s Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations.  His research uses a combination of traditional textual study and contemporary fieldwork to explore the local history of southeast China from the Ming dynasty to the twentieth century. His previous books include Practicing Kinship (Stanford, 2002) and Cold War Island: Quemoy on the Front Line (Cambridge, 2008).

Julia Cai currently oversees programs and activities for the Harvard China Fund and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies.

Karen  Christopher

Karen Christopher

Finance/Administrative Associate, Asia Center

Karen Christopher has worked in the Asia Center’s financial office since February 2000, assisting staff, affiliates, faculty, and students with financial and administrative issues. While the Fairbank Center is her first priority she also supports the other Asia-related research centers.

Nick Drake

Nick Drake

Office and Program Coordinator

Nick Drake received his BA from Hendrix College and his MA through Harvard's Regional Studies - East Asia program. During the past two years, Nick has helped develop new technical initiatives and programs as a student intern and administrative assistant for the Harvard China Fund and Fairbank Center. He aims to continue his engagement with Chinese culture and history in his new role as the Office and Program Coordinator for the Fairbank Center.

James Evans

James Evans

Communications Coordinator

James Evans coordinates digital communications, media relations, publicity outreach and graphic design at the Fairbank Center. Previously, James worked in public affairs for Weber Shandwick in Beijing and London, and has a background in public policy and digital communications across both China and Europe.

Mark J. Grady

Events Coordinator

Mark Grady joined the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies as its events coordinator in December 2013. Previously, he worked as a government contractor managing events for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in domestic and international locations, including Beijing and Guangzhou, China.

Nancy Hearst

Nancy Hearst

Librarian

Nancy Hearst is the librarian in the Fairbank Collection of the H.C. Fung Library. She makes periodic trips to China and Hong Kong to select new acquisitions. She also does free-lance editing and proofreading for China-related books, and English polishing for a number of state and party organizations in Beijing. Nancy has worked at Harvard for a long time.

Caitlin Keliher

Caitlin Keliher

Program Assistant, Harvard China Fund

Caitlin Keliher works at the Harvard China Fund as a Program Assistant. Caitlin graduated summa cum laude from George Washington University in 2014 with a BS in Economics and a second major in Chinese Language and Literature. She spent a year after graduation in Nanjing, China as a Service Fellow for Stanford University’s Volunteers in Asia, working at the Amity Foundation and teaching conversational English to university students.

Myunggyo Kim

Student Intern

Myunggyo Kim is a Master's student in the Regional Studies - East Asia program. She received her B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Yonsei University, South Korea. Her research interests include domestic and international migration in China and Korea since the late 19th century, especially Korean and Chinese diasporic migration and minority ethnic enclaves in East Asia.

Ying-Ming Lee has been working at the Fairbank Center Library since 1998 after several years of library work at the Harvard-Yenching Library.

Jennifer Rudolph

Jennifer Rudolph

Executive Director

Jennifer Rudolph, Executive Director of Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Executive Director of the Harvard China Fund, received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Chinese history from the University of Washington and A.B. from the University of Chicago.

Rebecca Victor

Student Intern

Rebecca is a G1 in the Regional Studies: East Asia program at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Her research interests include early 20th century Chinese literature, Beijing literature, and global Modernism. She received her B.A. in English literature from Columbia University.  

Justin Wong

Justin Wong

Program Assistant

Justin graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in Asian Studies and a double minor in Mandarin Chinese and Anthropology. He is interested in Chinese culture and history, which he pursued as a House Program Director of the Global Village Chinese Program at college. Justin previously worked at On Call International, a New Hampshire-based company specialized in providing medical relief to disaster situations across the world.
