Fudan ICSCC Fellowship for Harvard China Studies

Application Deadline: Due to logistical constraints, Fudan is unable to host this program for the 2019-20 academic year.

In order to promote Chinese studies and Sino-US academic exchange, the International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization (ICSCC) at Fudan University has launched the Fudan ICSCC Fellowship for Harvard China Studies. This is a funded opportunity for two outstanding doctoral students from Harvard to engage in research at Fudan University for 2 to 4 months in the fall or spring, preferably not during Chinese university recesses. Due to visa limitations, it is possible that some students may only be able to stay at Fudan for under 90 days.

Eligibility: This fellowship is for Harvard Ph.D. students working on China, with a focus on the humanities (art history, literature, philosophy, religion) and humanistic social sciences (history, archaeology, and cultural anthropology), who have passed their general exams and are conducting dissertation research.

Expectations: Students should be based in Shanghai. In addition to utilizing local resources for their dissertation research, the expectation is that fellowship recipients will participate actively in the academic activities of the ICSCC. Students will be asked to give a lecture, either in Chinese or English, on their research topic during their residency. ICSCC will do its best to help facilitate visits to other locations for research or academic exchange, as needed.

Funding: The ICSCC will cover expenses for roundtrip economy airfare, local accommodations and work facilities, as well as provide a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000 (after tax). Students will need to cover other expenses, including visa fees and international emergency health insurance.

Deadline for Applications:

May 1 (for fall semester)
December 1 (for spring semester)

Required Materials:

  • Research proposal, approximately 2 pages double-spaced, in both English and Chinese
  • Letter of support from faculty adviser
