Currently\, he is a Payne Distinguished Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1988. He is a member of the Standing Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He is vice president of the China American Studies Association\, vice president of the China Association for International Studies\, and vice president of the China Japanese Studies Association.
