Amy Zhang is a postdoctoral fellow at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University. She completed her PhD in the joint program in Anthropology and Environmental Studies at Yale University. Her research focuses primarily on two themes: environmental and material culture, and the development of urban infrastructure and politics. Her book manuscript Matter Transformed: Remaking Waste in Post-Reform Urban China examines the waste management crisis in Guangzhou and how the material practices of informal collectors, and citizens and environmentalists challenge the state’s vision of development, modernization and planned cities.
