Jingkai will be conducting a 9-month research project in China, as part of a cross-national study, to explain authoritarian regimes’ ability to manage domestic popular threats, which is a crucial factor in explaining the variation in authoritarian regimes’ durability. He has already conducted preliminary research and field work observation in China and Mexico. His dissertation seeks to bridge this gap by examining domestic popular threats that have both escalated and failed to escalate.
