Chao Lang (郎超) is a Ph.D. candidate in the History and East Asian Languages program. Her dissertation, titled “From Integration to Isolation: Altishahr Cotton and Merchant Networks in Xinjiang, 1759–1880s,” studies the pivotal role played by cotton and cotton textiles in integrating the newly conquered territory of Xinjiang into the Qing empire. It also explores the effects of the expansion of capitalism on the local economy in Xinjiang.
