Guttorm Norberg Gundersen (顧騰仁) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. His dissertation, “A Home Away from Home: A social-institutional history of the Upper Tianzhu Monastery in Song Dynasty China,” is a study of one of the most prominent monasteries of the Tiantai Buddhist tradition in the Song dynasty. The project anchors religious ideas in their social environment, taking account of patronage, pilgrimage, politics, and popular practices.
Research Interests: Buddhist studies, Chinese Middle-Period history, Practices of self-cultivation.
