Richard “Rich” Marino is an independent scholar of Chinese economics and a former Senior Vice-President of Morgan Stanley, Inc. in New York. He has been affiliated with the Fairbank Center since his acceptance as a Visiting Scholar in 2019. From 2019 to 2022, he remained a Visiting Scholar before transitioning into the Associate in Research program where he remains today.
Rich has written four academic books. The first one focused mainly on the emerging markets which at the time included China’s economy entitled “Submerging Markets” (2013) published by Palgrave Macmillan in London followed by the “The Future BRICS” (2014) also published by Palgrave Macmillan in London. This book takes apart the BRICS economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) individually and as a group. His third book, “Chinese Trade” (2019) dealt primarily with China’s trading patterns which emphasized trade deficits, state subsidies and the rise of China as a global economic powerhouse published by Routledge in London.
His latest book is entitled: “The Evolution of China’s Political Economy” which is due out May 1, 2023. This book in particular focuses on China’s rapid economic transformation which was hailed as a successful project that lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. However, in recent times, the Chinese narrative has taken a more negative turn in the eyes of the West. Much of this has to do with the West’s perception of the role of the Chinese state in its economy and its military build-up, especially in the South China Sea also published by Routledge in London.
