Calvin Heng is an aspiring Arctic researcher and a recent graduate of the Regional Studies—East Asia program.
As a history student, he studied knowledge popularization in Republican China before most recently delving into the emerging field of applied history.
Deeply concerned about Arctic sustainability amid rapid climate change, Calvin joined the Arctic Initiative, a project group housed at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs of the Harvard Kennedy School, as a graduate research assistant for Dr. Eyck Freymann.
Their interdisciplinary work mainly involves applying historical methods and knowledge to better understand geopolitical and diplomatic issues in the present. Calvin’s most recent work is a co-authored policy brief, Outsiders Wanting In: Asian States and Arctic Governance (2023), published by the Belfer Center.
