Return to Campus: Updates for our Affiliates

The Latest Covid Information from Harvard University

The Fairbank Center is in the process of welcoming back students, staff, faculty, and affiliates to campus for the first time in over eighteen months. Harvard’s policies on safely returning to campus provide up-to-date guidance on how the university is responding to changing trends in COVID-19 cases. As such, the information provided below for affiliates who plan on returning to campus is based on the most recent information from university leadership; it is subject to change in accordance with Harvard policy. We will keep you updated to the best of our ability as things develop, but if you have additional questions please contact us at

Vaccine/Booster Verification

Harvard requires COVID vaccination (including boosters) for all Harvard community members who will have any on-campus presence. You must verify your vaccination status with Harvard. You may claim exemption from the vaccine requirement for medical or religious reasons. Harvard also has additional information for international scholars.

Vaccinated faculty, staff, and researchers with an on-campus presence must test once per week; those who are unvaccinated must test twice per week.

To start testing, affiliates must first register for a account, and then complete a self-administered test at one of Harvard’s pick up-drop off locations.

Note that community remembers traveling from outside of Massachusetts have additional testing requirements.

Face Coverings

Harvard will continue to require face coverings indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Community members should use Harvard-provided face coverings, which we will supply in the Fairbank Center office.

Offices and Use of Space

The Fairbank Center will be staffed in a hybrid model with both remote and in-person days. Office space within the Fairbank Center may be available for affiliates during the semester, depending on the university’s guidance on social distancing and use of shared office spaces.

Library Access

The majority of Harvard’s libraries are currently open for physical access to Harvard ID holders (please check with individual libraries to confirm). The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Collection at the H.C. Fung Library is currently open to both Harvard affiliates and non-Harvard affiliates.

Online library resources can still be used with HarvardKey access. Additionally, you can use Harvard’s Hollis library website to request physical books to be picked up using the Front Door Pickup service. For more information please consult the library’s website and their current guide to borrowing materials.

All Fairbank Center public events will continue to be held virtually for the Spring 2022 semester.
