Shinyi Hsieh received her Ph.D. in History from the University of California, San Francisco. Through a postcolonial lens, her dissertation centers on the marginalized trajectories of schoolchildren, female technicians, and experimental monkeys of Taiwan during the 1950s and 1960s as they interacted with U.S.-led global health campaigns on trachoma. Hsieh is currently working on a manuscript as an extension of her doctoral dissertation. She aims to trace the postwar encounters between people, knowledge, power, and visions surrounding the US Naval Medical Research Unit Two (NAMRU- 2) operations based in Taiwan from 1955 to 1975, as well as its southbound geomedical expansion across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
