Nan-Hsu Chen received his Ph.D. in History from Washington University in St. Louis. His current project, tentatively entitled “China’s State-Making on Maritime Frontiers in the Late Nineteenth Century,” explores the interaction between global forces and the transformation of China’s frontiers into directly ruled territories. His dissertation investigates how populations of Taiwan evaluated, constructed, and reoriented their relationships with external political authorities in an East Asian context over the nineteenth century.
