An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships have historically supported junior scholars in any discipline. Postdoctoral fellows are chosen from a competitive selection process. They spend one year at the Fairbank Center working on research for a book manuscript or articles. In addition, they deliver research presentations to the Fairbank Center community and mentor the Center’s graduate student associates. View the current postdoctoral fellows.
2023-2024 An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowships
The application period has closed for the 2023-24 fellowships (the deadline was January 17).
The next application round will be January 2024 for the 2024 – 2025 academic year.
For the 2023-24 An Wang Fellowships there is no specific topical theme within Chinese studies. Research proposals may cover contemporary China or focus on any historical period. During the one-year fellowship, each fellow will be expected to pursue their own research, be in residence in the Cambridge/Boston area, and contribute to Fairbank Center programs. Priority will be given to candidates working in the humanities or social sciences; however, we also welcome applications from scholars in other fields. Priority be given to applicants whose research aligns with the work of Harvard faculty members.
Fellows are expected to reside in the Greater Boston area for the duration of the fellowship.
A strong working knowledge of Chinese and English is required. A doctoral degree is required by one month prior to the start of the fellowship.
Applicants may not be more than five years beyond the receipt of their PhD degree at the start of the fellowship. Harvard University doctoral degree recipients are not eligible for this fellowship.
Applicants must notify the Fairbank Center of any changes to the information provided in their application that may impact eligibility. Failure to communicate such changes may result in disqualification.

To apply, you are required to submit an online application.
All application materials must be in English. You are required to submit:
• A one to two-page cover letter that briefly states your interest in the program, your background, and a summary of your research project. Please indicate if there are specific Harvard faculty with whom you intend to work (but please do not contact faculty directly at this stage).
• A five-page, double-spaced research proposal
• A writing sample (academic paper or dissertation chapter)
• Two to three letters of reference
If you have not received your doctorate degree at the time of application, you must ask your PhD dissertation advisor to submit the An Wang Postdoctoral Fellowship Advisor Confirmation Form. This form must be completed by your advisor and sent to firstname.lastname@example.org within two weeks of application submission.
