Bio
Yi Ren received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently converting her dissertation, “The Maoist Message in the Chinese Countryside, 1949-1978,” into a book spotlighting the intricate interactions between the Chinese Communist Party, its grassroots agents, and the rural population. This unique perspective not only redefines the social dimensions of propaganda but also underscores the significance of grassroots agency in shaping the history of the People’s Republic of China.
Research Interests: Modern Chinese history, rural China, state propaganda, popular culture in Maoist China, disability studies.
