Bio

Weihong Bao (包未鸿) is Associate Professor in the Departments of Film and Media and East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently a 2022-23 Faculty Fellow at the Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley College. Her current research project, “Background Matters: Set Design and The Art of Environment,” explores the twin development of environmental thinking in human sciences and set design across film, theater, architecture, and urban planning in modern China.

Research Interests: Comparative media history and theory, media and environment, early cinema, war and modernity, affect theory, propaganda theory and practice, and Chinese language cinema.
